Experiential Learning

What is Experiential Learning?

Experiential learning is a hands-on approach where students gain knowledge and transferable skills by engaging directly in real-world tasks and reflecting on their experiences. This approach enriches academic learning by fostering personal growth, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and professional development.

Study Abroad
Studying abroad offers students the chance to pursue their education through an international perspective, providing an immersive experience in different cultural and academic environments. Living and studying in new places develops independence, adaptability, and confidence while helping them gain career-focused skills like problem solving and cultural competency. At UC Merced, study abroad programs let students earn academic credit, travel during the summer, fall or spring terms, and use financial aid to cover costs.
Leadership
Leadership involves engaging in activities that guide, inspire, and influence others toward achieving common goals. Leadership develops critical skills, fosters a sense of responsibility and collaboration, and encourages students to make a positive impact and meaningful change on their communities. UC Merced students can take on leadership positions in student clubs and organizations, student employment, and much more.
Community Service
Community Service allows students to contribute time and effort to benefit others to give back, impact the community, and cultivate skills and personal growth. At UC Merced, community service can be done by participating through various avenues such as the Community Engagement Center, student clubs, course-related projects, self-directed initiatives, and other forms of voluntary service.
Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research offers students the chance to engage in hands-on research experiences across various disciplines. Opportunities include working alongside faculty on cutting-edge projects, participating in summer research programs, and accessing funding through grants and scholarships. Students can present their findings at conferences and gain valuable skills that enhance their academic and professional development. UC Merced research centers and labs provide state-of-the-art facilities, fostering an environment of innovation and discovery.
Internship
An internship is a structured work experience, whether paid or unpaid. When completing an internship, students take their knowledge beyond the classroom to industry while building their network, solidifying their academic and career goals, and preparing for employment upon graduation. At UC Merced, students can complete an internship on-campus or off-campus during the academic year or summer in either in-person, virtual, or hybrid modalities.
